#nails - fungal infection of the nails: causes, symptoms and how to prevent.

The fungal infection of the nails is one of the commonest dermatological disorders in clinical practice. It is known that this infection occurs very gradually, mainly in toenails that grow 3 times more slowly than fingernails. When the patient realizes, the nail is completely affected: at this point, an aggressive anti-fungal treatment should be initiated.

The scientific name of the nails mycosis is onychomycosis; treatment is long and the complete eradication of the fungus is often impossible because latent forms, known as spores, can remain "dormant". When an immune deficiency occurs, the dormant fungi become active and cause a new infection.

Causes
The main predisposing factor for onychomycosis is sweating; that's why fungal infections appear more frequently in the summer months. In this season, the feet get warmer and more humid; besides, there is greater exposure to pools, beaches and showers, which can increase the sources of transmission. Fungi reproduce more readily in humid surfaces: therefore, always dry your feet well.

Symptoms
The main symptoms are changes in color and thickness of the nail. Sometimes they acquire a bad odor. It is important to note that fungi do not reproduce just in the nails, but also between the fingers and these areas should also be approached and treated quickly. Observing any of these symptoms, visit a dermatologist and start drug treatment.

How to protect your feet?
It is important to wear shoes that allow ventilation of the feet, as the preference of fungi will always be darkness, humidity and heat.

  • Do not walk barefoot in very crowded places such as showers of gyms, pools, etc.
  • Constantly dry your feet after every bath, and whenever they are wet.
  • Expose your feet to direct sunlight; this will help prevent fungal infections.
  • Do not share your shoes with other people; we can not know who is infected.
