Enlargement of the breasts in men is called gynecomastia. This over-development can happen in any age, but it is especially troublesome in teenagers. Obesity,
heredity, hormones and certain drugs are the reasons behind gynecomastia. Almost always, gynecomastia means emotional distress: confidence
levels and self-esteem usually go down and bullying can occur.
The most common causes refer to: 1. over-development of glandular tissues; 2. accumulated or localized fat.
Treatment
Testosterone
replacement is carried out in cases of low testosterone levels. Plastic surgery
is beneficial in severe long term gynecomastia, reducing breasts size and
making them look normal.
Patients
should maintain the body weight after the surgery or treatment; otherwise, gynecomastia
may recur.
