#vitaminC for topical use: get to know more about this powerful antioxidant (for the sake of your skin!)

Due to its powerful antioxidant activity, the cosmeceutical industry has invested in formulas with high concentrations of vitamin C (ascorbic acid). It is known, however, that the molecule of vitamin C is highly unstable and can lose its action due to heat or light. Therefore, efforts have been done in the manufacture of concentrated formulas with stable molecules, to ensure its antioxidant power. Today we know that vitamin C applied on clean skin before sunscreen also improves sun protection.

During this "evolution", I have tried many products and I prescribe my favorite ones for my patients. Skinceuticals brand has its antioxidant serums based on stabilized vitamin C, consisting of 3 products that I love, each one with its indications. Serum 10 for younger skins (up to 40), has 10 % Vitamin C ( L-ascorbic acid ) associated with another antioxidant, ferulic acid. It has a light texture and is quickly absorbed. CE Ferulic combines 15 % vitamin C with another potent antioxidant, vitamin E. It is suitable for normal to dry mature skin. And finally, Phloretin CF, 10 % of vitamin C and Phloretin, which adds a bleaching action (ideal for spotty skin). Besides the pleasant texture developed by Skinceuticals, I also highlight the product's durability. 3 or 4 drops of these serums are enough to cover the face. Can be used in the morning (before the sunscreen) and at night. The results in skin quality are quickly noticed.
I will also mention here the Powerful Strength Line Reducing Concentrate from Kiehl's, with 10.5 % of vitamin C. This excellent product is more suitable for dry skin because it causes a bit of oiliness.
